                                           Executive Director's Message

Picture
Welcome to the Farmington Community Center. Thanks for taking the time to visit our site, we're happy to have you. The Farmington Community Center has seen a lot of change over the past few years. We have come a long way from being a facility that was run down and used mostly for storage to one that is working to meet needs in our community. Because of the hard work of volunteers and the generous donations we have received, this place has become more than just a facility that holds a lot of memories. It now is a place were families can come to not only reminiscence of days gone by, but one in which to make new memories to share for generations to come. We're a facility that is full of life, an organization that is growing, and an important piece of Farmington history that is still thriving.

As the Executive Director, it is rewarding to meet people of all ages who come and go each week and who are benefiting in some way, because we are here. From the young ones who come for their club meetings, ball practice, or just to play with friends to the seniors who come in to get a hot lunch, enjoy an activity and fellowship with friends. Seeing the teens who enjoy the Teen Gathering Place every Friday night, musicians bringing in their instruments for the weekly Bluegrass Jam, farmers coming in to sell their freshly picked produce, and local families coming in to plan their special gatherings are all a blessing to me. It has also been a blessing to see all the volunteers who have given their time to make this a better place for people to enjoy. It takes a lot of work to keep up a facility like this and there is always something that needs to be done. Being a non-profit means that we have to rely heavily on the dedication of volunteers and it is they who make a difference here. I am proud to be a part of this organization and this community. I hope that you will come by to visit the Farmington Community Center soon to see for yourself what makes this place special and maybe to make some memories of your own.

                                     Executive Director's Report

Programs Update

In 2011, the Davie Senior Services program served 75 different seniors with the yearly total served being 2,199. Numbers have declined from last year due in part to failing health of some of the seniors and a reduction of hours for the program. Program is free for seniors age 60 & up.
The Davie United Way granted $10,000 toward the cost of housing the program.

In 2011, the
Teen Gathering Place program served 131 different teens with the yearly
total served being 1,316. Numbers have nearly doubled from last year and volunteers for the program have increased as well. Program is free for youth ages 12 & up.
The Davie United Way granted $4,000 toward the cost of the program.

New for 2012, is the
Growing a Healthier Future program that will include a Youth Garden, a Youth Market, and classes that will teach horticulture, preserving and marketing produce, and healthy cooking classes. The classes will be open to all ages and the Youth Garden & Market can be shared by families who are wanting to participate in the program together.  We are currently applying for grants to aid in the cost of the program.

Farmers Market

The market ran from June- September and was very successful. Around 20 vendors participated during the market season with an increase of about 40% from 2010. The market continues to take pride in supporting our local farmers and being a market that provides local homegrown and handmade items.

2011 Fundraisers

The Friday Night Bluegrass Jam raised around $6,000 in 2011 with a 50% increase from 2010.
All of the proceeds from the Bluegrass Jam has went toward the cafeteria renovation.

The Farmington Expo event raised over $500 in 2011. Proceeds from the event was split between the Cafeteria Renovation and New Playground projects.

The Tour of Farmington raised around $4,500 in 2011, up from $2,000 in 2010.
Proceeds from the event went toward the Nature Park project.

Grants Received in 2011

A grant of $10,000 was received from the County of Davie. These funds are used throughout the year toward maintenance cost of the grounds and the building facilities.

Grants totaling $1500 was received from Walmart Inc. $1,250 went toward the Nature Park project and $250 went into general funds.

Donations Received in 2011
The former Farmington Medical Center was donated to the Farmington Community Center in December. The medical center's Board of Directors turned over the property to the community center to be used in a way that would benefit the center, either through renting out the facility or by selling the property and use the funds where needed at the community center.

Total assessed value approx. $210,000.

Cash donations
that were given in 2011 totaled $3,478. All of which were designated to the cafeteria renovation.

Meeting Needs in the Community

The Farmington Community Center continues to work toward “Preserving the Past to Promote the Future” by continuing to renovate and preserve this historic facility for the use of families for generations to come. Our goal is not only to preserve the facility, but to put it to work for the community. Along with the programs offered at the center, we also house the Farmington Ruritans, Girl Scouts, 4-H, Good Timers Square Dance, and Davie Co. Coon Hunters clubs and provide a place for the Davie Cooperative Extension to host their Junior Master Gardener Day Camp. We support those with disabilities with our Farmington Deaf Social & Sarah's Davie Friends clubs. There is currently the Country Partner Line Dance Class and Zumba Classes offered at the community center and the Friday Night Bluegrass Jam which provides a place for people to come and enjoy music by local musicians.

As a recreational facility, we are continuing to work toward making improvements to the recreational areas so that local teams will have a place to practice their sport and families will have a place to enjoy healthy activities. In the near future we will be installing a new playground and are also working toward providing biking & hiking trails along with other activities on the land designated for the future Nature Park.

Something to Celebrate

The Farmington Community Center is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places as being within the Historic District of Farmington.
